From the moment I watched “The Video” of Carolyn Scott and Rookie performing their Grease routine, I knew that Canine Freestyle was the experience I had been looking for. Until then, my efforts at dog training had focused on basic obedience work. Although necessary, that obedience work did not highlight the personality of my Golden Girls the way Freestyle has.
After attending a few of Carolyn’s seminars, I was lucky enough to find a small, but motivated, group of friends here in Vermont that shared my passion for our sport and their canine companions. Our “Paws in Motion” group continues to be a place where I can try new ideas, receive encouragement and spread the word about the joys of this fun sport. In addition to meeting new friends, my involvement with Freestyle brought a new dimension to my canine relationships; first with Annabelle (1995-2005) and now Stella.
Although the opportunity to meet with other freestylers and enjoy their performances has been inspiring, the most rewarding part of the sport for us has been the chance to share it with the Community. Seeing an elderly face light up at one of the local nursing homes or the delight in a child’s eyes during one of our performances is a joy I would have missed without Freestyle. I’m just not sure who enjoys these magical moments more, Stella or me. I am grateful for all the wonderful people I meet along this amazing Freestyle journey.
My husband and I live in beautiful Vermont with our 3 Golden Retrievers. We all enjoy outdoor activities year round ; hiking the mountains, swimming in the lake, and snowshoeing in the woods.
